The 10 Koron Austro-Węgry gold coin featuring the portrait of Emperor Franz Joseph I is one of the most popular historical investment coins in Central Europe. The issuance of crown coins was introduced after the major currency reform of 1892, which replaced the previous gulden with the new currency – the Austrian crown.

The obverse of the coin depicts the bust of Franz Joseph I, the long-reigning ruler of Austria-Hungary, who reigned from 1848 until his death in 1916. The reverse features the double-headed eagle from the Habsburg coat of arms. The coin is made of a gold alloy with a copper content in a ratio of 900/1000, which increases its resistance to mechanical damage.

Original or new strike from 1915?

It is worth noting that the 10 Koron coin dated 1915 is a so-called "new strike" (Neuprägung) – an official restrike produced by the Vienna Mint after the collapse of the monarchy, continued to this day for the needs of the investment market. These specimens have identical parameters and purity to original coins, but from a numismatic perspective, they differ in collectible value from coins actually struck during the period 1892–1914.
