7.5 Rubles is a rare and unique Russian bullion coin, minted with the portrait of Tsar Nicholas II exclusively in one year – 1897. It was created as part of the monetary reform by Finance Minister Sergei Witte, introducing the gold standard in the Russian Empire as a counterpart to the former half-imperial ruble. Due to its short minting period, it is highly sought after by both investors and numismatists.

The 7.5 Ruble Russian coin is minted in 900/1000 fineness, with a total weight of 6.45 g, of which approximately 5.81 g is pure gold. A small copper alloy in the composition increases the coin's hardness and resistance to scratches and deformation, allowing many specimens to remain in good condition despite over 100 years since minting.

The Monetary Reform of Sergei Witte

The 7.5 Ruble coin was created at the end of the 19th century as part of a monetary reform that based the Russian monetary system on the gold standard. It replaced the old half-imperial ruble, whose nominal value increased to 7.5 rubles due to the decline in the value of credit money. From 1897, more convenient, lighter gold coins with denominations of 5, 7.5, 10, and 15 rubles were minted, all in 900/1000 fineness. This system collapsed with the outbreak of World War I and the Bolshevik revolution, and many coins were requisitioned and melted during this period, further increasing the historical value of preserved specimens.
